Details

These avant garde statement earrings are made from upcycled, used coffee filters and 925 sterling silver. These abstract and sculptural earrings are a constant source of complements and curiosity. To create these contemporary earrings, I build up layers of stained and reclaimed coffee filters, paper-mache style. The result is a hollow and lightweight form that is very comfortable to wear. The unique surface texture has a layered depth that resembles marbled stone, or mycelium.

The resulting build-up of paper is hard and thick like a shell. The final finished surface is coated with a matte medium for durability, and water resistance.

These used coffee filters come from my own kitchen as well as from friends and family. They are individually washed and selected for their stain pattern. I started making sculpture and jewelry from used coffee filters while I was studying metalsmithing at the University of Washington. I have explored and refined many ways to utilize this post-consumer product. Once the coffee filters are washed and dried they are surprisingly beautiful and a constant source of inspiration for me.

The hollow paper forms are trimmed with black oxidized sterling silver caps and ear wires allowing the earrings to dangle in the wind.

These modern earrings are handcrafted by me in my little jewelry studio on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. I use time honored metalsmithing techniques to fabricate the silver components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sterling Silver Care Instructions

Silver can tarnish over time. To slow the process, store your silver jewelry in an air tight container. Keep your silver jewelry clean of chemicals and oils by occasionally washing with warm soapy water. A polishing cloth can bring back the original brightness of the silver. For oxidized silver, a polishing cloth may be desired to highlight the piece while keeping recessed areas dark as intended. For silver oxidized to full black, no polishing is needed, simply wash the surface with soap or alcohol occasionally.

My brass jewelry is turning my skin green. What can I do?

Some people have strong reactions to brass and bronze, while others have no reaction at all. If you are susceptible to these reactions, purchasing Sterling Silver jewelry might be a better option.

How do I care for my coffee filter jewelry?

Coffee filter jewelry has a water resistant coating. It is durable enough to wear in the rain. To clean, it's best not to soak the paper, simply dust the surface with a dry cloth or brush and carefully wipe down the ear wires with water or alcohol.

How do I find my ring size?

My rings come in US ring sizes. If you don't know your ring size, have a local jeweler size your finger for you. Or if you prefer to size your finger yourself visit this site for methods, charts and downloadable sample sizes:
