Abstract Statement Earrings, Dangly Sculptural Earrings

Shipping to United States: Free

These abstract statement earrings are made with black-oxidized sterling silver and upcycled, naturally stained coffee filters. The soft, translucent coffee filters contrast beautifully with the bold dark lines of silver circles. Each sculptural earring has 6 translucent circles that cascade from the ear wires, dangling from sturdy monofilament lines. The paper circles gently clink together, making a pleasant and subtle sound. Sculptural and contemporary, these modern art earrings have dramatic visual weight, but are lightweight and comfortable.

The coffee filters are stretched over a sturdy, hand fabricated sterling silver wire armature that I make in my jewelry studio and feature long sterling silver fish hooks. Each coffee filter is coated with a water based sealer for durability.

These used coffee filters come from my own kitchen as well as from friends and family. They are individually washed and selected for their stain pattern. I started making sculpture and jewelry from used coffee filters while I was studying metalsmithing at the University of Washington. I have explored and refined many ways to utilize this post-consumer product. Once the coffee filters are washed and dried they are surprisingly beautiful and a constant source of inspiration for me.

Because these modern earrings are handmade, each pair varies slightly.

Total Earring Length from top of wire: 2"
Earring width: 1"
Width of one translucent circle: .5" +

These are so fun, I have very short dark brown/grey hair (I shaved my head this summer just for fun) and these look amazing. And once again they make a great sound! Sara has such unique pieces and I'm sure I'll be getting more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sterling Silver Care Instructions

Silver can tarnish over time. To slow the process, store your silver jewelry in an air tight container. Keep your silver jewelry clean of chemicals and oils by occasionally washing with warm soapy water. A polishing cloth can bring back the original brightness of the silver. For oxidized silver, a polishing cloth may be desired to highlight the piece while keeping recessed areas dark as intended. For silver oxidized to full black, no polishing is needed, simply wash the surface with soap or alcohol occasionally.

My brass jewelry is turning my skin green. What can I do?

Some people have strong reactions to brass and bronze, while others have no reaction at all. If you are susceptible to these reactions, purchasing Sterling Silver jewelry might be a better option.

How do I care for my coffee filter jewelry?

Coffee filter jewelry has a water resistant coating. It is durable enough to wear in the rain. To clean, it's best not to soak the paper, simply dust the surface with a dry cloth or brush and carefully wipe down the ear wires with water or alcohol.

How do I find my ring size?

My rings come in US ring sizes. If you don't know your ring size, have a local jeweler size your finger for you. Or if you prefer to size your finger yourself visit this site for methods, charts and downloadable sample sizes:
